Information about medieval dress

The medieval period had societies organized in feudal system. Apart from many other things, clothing was also used as a means to specify social status and the divisions in the society. Therefore, there were rules regarding clothing system depending on the class one belonged to. Only the wealthy and influential people were allowed to dress in fashionable clothes.

The common man or the peasant generally wore a short tunic with leather or a rope belt. This was designed to be practical for everyday work and was plain and simple. The women wore a single tunic or two tunics with sleeves. A peasant woman was allowed to wear a simple belt and veil to cover the back of her hair. During kitchen work, an apron was allowed. Lace shoes and woolen stocking were worn by them during cold weather.

The medieval dress for knights included a basic linen shirt and trousers topped with padded coat to protect the skin from the weight of the armor. The stocking were made of wool. Armor of the knight was made of metal and usually had a headpiece.

The lords and ladies dresses according to the social status. Men wore fancy robes and bejeweled belts. The ladies wore medieval dress which was tight fitting and rich with jewels sewn into them.

The kings and queens wore the most expensive and exclusive medieval dress. Their clothing was luxurious and beautiful. Kings were the only privileged to wear gold and purple. Their dresses were sewn with jewels and precious stones.
